Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment

I think this book would be fine for ages 11 or 12 and up.


This book is about 6 kids:  Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman (Gazzy), and Angel.  They were all experiments (half bird, half human) and they escape.  Now they are on the run and they have chosen Max as their leader.  They think they have found somewhere safe to live until the creatures called the erasers kidnap Angel.  Since Gazzy is only eight, they leave him behind.  They also leave Iggy because he is blind.  Max, Fang, and Nudge go to find Angel.  On the way there Max sees a girl being bullied by some guys.  She stops to help, while Nudge and Fang continue on.  Max manages to save the girl, but gets shot in the shoulder (and wing) and can't continue on.  She goes to the house of the girl she saved.  Her name is Ella, and Max tells them everything,  even about her wings.  They take her to the doctor for an X-ray.  That is when she realizes she has a tracking device in her arm.  She runs away and eventually finds Nudge, Fang and soon Iggy and Gazzy who also ran away.  After finding Angel, they run to New York. That is when Max finds out she has a voice in her head, but she doesn't know if it is there to help or hurt her.  Then they find out that there is an underground experiment lab.  They immediately go down there to see if they can find any research on their real parents.  When they get down there, they find something that they never expected to find,  something that could change their lives forever.


I loved this book.  It was so good, and I think anyone between the ages of 11-15 would love it.


My favorite character would either be Fang or Iggy.  Fang is very serious and to the point, while Iggy is funny and jokes around a lot.


This book has mild romance (one kiss),  mild to medium bad language, and medium violence.

The Selection

I would recommend this book to people no younger than twelve, maybe thirteen.


This book is about America and she has just turned sixteen.  Where America lives, all of the people are ranked on the wealth line.  Ones are the kings and queens while number eight are the slaves.  America is a five and her boyfriend, Aspen is a six.  Aspen is about to ask America to marry him, until there is an invitation for girls ages 16-24 to go to the palace so that Prince Maxin can pick his bride.  If you sign the forms you automatically become a number three.  America decides not to go, so she can marry Aspen but Aspen realizes that he doesn't want to marry America.  He is afraid he won't be able to take care of her since he is so poor.  He urges America to sign the forms so she will become a three, then when she goes to the palace he tells her to immediately lose so she can go back to him and they can be married as threes.   She agrees and signs the forms, and in a week is sent off with 35 other girls to the palace.  One by one the girls meet the prince.  The prince tells America he does not want to marry her, but he would like someone who knows the girls well to tell him which one to marry.  America agrees as long as he says he will not marry her.  America stays with Prince Maxin for weeks telling him who to eliminate and when.  Now there are only 17 girls left, and America can't wait to go home.  That night rebels attack the palace, and two girls leave the competition out of fear.   Prince Maxin says he will let America leave if she wants to.  She declines and says she would rather help him pick a wife.  As the days pass Maxin and America begin to fall in love.  Although she told him not to pick her, she now realizes she would not mind being picked.  As they start dating, Aspen is asked to work as a guard for the palace.  He agrees, but soon sees that  the prince and America have gotten very close.  Now America must make a choice.... but who will she choose?


This is an amazing book and that I think a lot of people would love it.


My favorite character is Maxin.   I like how he asks America to help him pick a wife, because he doesn't want to hurt anyones feelings.


There is no bad language, and no violence.  There is medium romance that would not be appropriate for younger kids, and the second book does get worse on the romance.

Divergent

This is a good book for twelve and up.  There are some things that may not be good for kids any younger.


Tris just turned 16 along with her brother Caleb.  Once you turn 16 you have the opportunity to change your faction [ Candor, Amity, Abegnation, Erudite, or Dauntless].   Tris and Caleb were both born into Abegnation, [ the selfless ].  They can choose to either stay in their original faction or change.  Caleb chooses Euridite, [ the smart ] while Tris chooses Dauntless, [ the fearless ].  They both leave their old life to find a new one in their new faction.  This story follows Tris and her adventures in Dauntless.  First the people who transferred have to prove they belong in that particular faction.  The transfers must jump from a moving train onto a roof.  After the transfers complete this task, they think they have made it into that faction for sure.  Then the Dauntless leader Eric tells them only half of them will make it in and those who don't will become factionless.  Their first task is to beat everyone else in a fight.  The top 14 will move on.  Tris' first fight is against Molly. They must continue to fight until one of them becomes unable to continue.  Although Tris does not win all of her fights, she still makes it in seventh place.  She and her friends: Al, Christina and Will make it to stage two.  Stage 2 is called Facing your Fears.  In dauntless they literally put you into your worst fears and you have to conquer them.  The only person to successfully conquer it is Tris.  This makes everyone else jealous, and they decide to  "get rid of the competition." That night Tris is kidnapped and taken to be killed.  After  she escapes, she realizes one of her kidnappers was her friend Al.  She tells him that she will never forgive him for that.  Al realizes he does  not belong in Dauntless, so he decides he would rather die than hurt anyone else.  That night Al jumps into a pit and dies.  Tris goes to visit Caleb in Euridite, and she learns that the Euridite faction has developed a serum to control the Abegnation and Dauntless factions.  Tris only has a couple of days to warn everyone, but how can she warn two factions in time??


This is by far the best book I have ever read.  It is absolutely incredible and I highly recommend it.


My favorite character was Al because he was sweet and really liked Tris.


This book has medium romance, and medium violence.  To me, it had medium language a couple of times through out the book, but to some people it might be considered minor.
